Our work on a 57-codon E. coli genome is out!

Excited to see our work on constructing and optimizing a genetic-code-engineered Escherichia coli genome published today in Nature Communications. This is a step toward building safer cellular technologies. Constructing a 57-codon Escherichia coli genome (now in six strains) turned out to be much more challenging than simply redesigning DNA sequences and assembling them. Throughout the project, we found that genome recoding affected gene expression at multiple levels. We iden

Second prize at AI and biology symposium from the Schmidt Center

I was awarded the second prize at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center Symposium 2026 in Boston for my poster and short talk presentation titled "Biosynthesis of non-standard amino acids with AI" (poster #24). Thank you very much to the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for the opportunity to present my research and for this recognition! And thank you to my collaborators, including Peter G Mikhael and Itamar Chinn, and to our mentors, George Church, Regina Barzilay, and Gregory Ste

Presented at DOE PI Meeting in Washington DC

I attended the Biological Systems Science Division (BSSD) 2026 Annual Principal Investigator (PI) Meeting from the USA Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington DC from February 23 to 25 (https://www.orau.gov/2026bssdpimtg)! I presented a poster (#124) entitled "Biosynthesis of non-standard amino acids with AI" within the Artificial Intelligence subsection.
